"Erin is professional and passionate about her work. She is able to share this as a supervisor, in addition to her expertise and knowledge in horticulture and horticultural therapy. Erin is easy to work with and communicates well in providing direction and feedback. She afforded me ample opportunity to work on a variety of goals, including the development and delivery of programs to the students. Erin’s effective and caring manner as a horticultural therapist was instrumental in my decision to go beyond a certificate in horticultural therapy and pursue professional registration as a horticultural therapist".

As a coordinator of a Therapeutic Horticulture Program at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, I was in search of an HTR distant supervisor to help me accomplish accredited internship hours for the pursuit of becoming a Registered Horticultural Therapist. It had been challenging to find someone to supervise me while I coordinate an existing program in Maine.  At the time of my search, we didn't have any HTRs working in the state nor willing to travel as a distant supervisor. I reached out to the Northeast Horticultural Therapy Network for any referrals and without hesitancy, Erin was highly recommended to me.  When she and I were connected through NeHTN she was steadfast towards helping me out.  We quickly got through the logistics for her to come to Boothbay that following spring, summer and autumn.  Erin is very organized, diligent and holds our profession with the highest regard.  With weekly calls, e-mail correspondences and three visits to Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, she helped me achieve the internship requirements with ease. Her support gave me more confidence while I grasped onto the skills for documentation, journaling and better organization for managing my program.  I feel more effective and knowledgeable with how I can continue to improve my program. I too, highly recommend Erin Backus as a supervisor for anyone wanting to become a fellow Registered Horticultural Therapist.

Click here to"I was very fortunate that Erin Backus, HTR was my distance supervisor for my horticultural therapy internship. Erin is knowledgeable, supportive, flexible, calming and fun! Trained by AHTA to be a
distance supervisor, she kept me on track to thoroughly complete all the requirements of a distance internship in a 3 month time span.
The internship occurred at my workplace, a private nonprofit school
for students with special needs; the skills I gained had an immediate positive impact on our school’s therapeutic horticulture program.
Erin braved the New England winter to travel 4 hours each way for
our site visits, which were a combination of formal supervision and informal discussion about various
topics related to horticultural therapy. Our weekly Skype meetings were informative and productive, reviewing topics I had identified as wanting to learn about in our initial goal setting meeting; Erin’s extensive horticultural experience with native plants, wildflowers, butterfly gardens, and garden design was especially interesting to me; she also taught me about her own current horticultural therapy practice with people with addictions, and we had interesting conversations about the similarities and
differences with our two populations. Erin guided me through my internship to be a self – motivated
learner, which will serve me well as I continue the life- long learning path needed to be an informed horticultural therapist. Thank you, Erin! "
